Oil painting of a sunlit balcony between tall marble columns. Pilate, in a pale cream robe with his back to us, stretches one arm toward Jesus, who stands beside him wearing a crown of thorns, bare to the waist, his hands bound behind him and a red robe around his hips. Below the railing a dense crowd fills the street, and more people gesture from a rooftop across the way. Roman soldiers, a gilded eagle standard and an empty chair draped in a leopard skin are on the left; on the right, a woman in a gold mantle looks down while another woman leans toward her.

The power to release

Pilate told Jesus he had the power to crucify him and the power to release him. He condemned an innocent man, freed a guilty one, and washed his hands. He isn't the worst of them. He's a sign of what to watch for.
